About The Event
AFL and Disability Sports Australia are presenting a special edition of a Variety Abilities Unleashed - Kids event! Get active with us in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment during the 2023 Toyota Wheelchair AFL National Championships at the State Netball Hockey Centre.
Children aged 5-18 years living with sensory, physical and intellectual disabilities are invited to this free event. Proudly supported by Variety - the Children's Charity Victoria and MatchWorks, participants will be encouraged and empowered to explore local adaptive sport and recreation opportunities alongside spectating an elite level disability sport.
How the day will look
Participants will be split into smaller class groups (maximum 20) upon registration. After a welcome at 10 AM, they will rotate across 4-6 stations. These activities will consist of modified AFL and sport and active recreation with the use of adaptive equipment to suit the participants. The stations will be facilitated by specialised coaches with the support of students and community organisations.
A part of your day will involve cheering on the nation's best Wheelchair AFL athletes in the first day of the national tournament. Following your registration, a staff member will contact you prior to the event to let you know which team your class will be supporting. A sea of colours, posters, and chants will help get your team over the line!
The formalities of the day will finish at approximately 1 PM. Schools are welcome to stay at the event to watch the final matches until 2 PM.
A detailed run sheet will be provided one week prior to the event.
Transport
In the registration form there will be an offer of financial support towards transport. Transport support will be available upon request by organisers.
Photography
There will be videographers and photographers capturing content of the event with the intentions of promoting disability inclusive sport. A media consent form will be sent across. On the day, participants wishing to not be captured will be given a coloured wristband.
Places are expected to fill quickly, register today!
